Geotourism Map 1:100,000

The UNESCO Global Geopark Harz • Braunschweiger Land • Ostfalen is centrally located in the heart of Germany and consists of a northern and a southern section. With a total area of over 9,000 square meters, it is Germany’s largest geopark. This region is not only an industrial and research hub but also one of Germany’s most important tourist destinations.

The map shows the northern part of the geopark. The Braunschweiger Land is characterized by a special and unique geological diversity. Marine environments alternated with deserts, tropical swamps, and glaciers. As a result, valuable mineral resources such as ore, salt, and petroleum were formed. Significant fossil finds bear witness to the eventful and fascinating history of this region. Various landmarks and geopoints, such as natural and artificial outcrops, boulder gardens, and museums, offer impressive insights into the Earth’s history.

The Elm-Lappwald Nature Park is also located in the northern part of the geopark. It is the largest beech forest in northern Germany and, together with the mysterious Lappwald and the unspoiled Dorm, offers impressive nature experiences. The numerous hiking and biking trails, with a total length of about 600 km, have something to offer both hikers and cyclists.
In addition to protecting the geological heritage and supporting scientific research, the Geopark’s primary goals are to promote sustainable tourism and foster sustainable development. It connects existing institutions and supports joint activities in these areas.

In 2003, it was recognized as a National Geopark and in 2005 as a European Geopark. In 2015, it was admitted to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Since the geopark was founded, our educational offerings have been continuously expanded and adapted to current societal discussions. In our programs, we address topics such as Earth’s history, rocks, and geological resources, as well as soil, archaeology, nature, and cultural history for each target group. In doing so, we increasingly incorporate aspects such as sustainability, climate change, and fair trade.

For those who prefer to explore our Geopark region with guidance, our specially trained geoguides offer a wide range of guided tours. Customized tours and activities can be organized for each target group at the individual geosites and along the geotrails.
