The region around Erfoud and Rissani is often, and quite unfairly, mentioned only in connection with desert excursions to the Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. However, anyone who takes the time to explore the valleys of the Oued Todgha, the Oued Gheris and, above all, the Oued Ziz will come across rarely mentioned attractions, which one can often enjoy visiting in complete solitude. There are numerous ksour with interesting layouts, where one can discover artistically crafted details.
Not to be missed are Hansjörg Voth’s monumental works of art set in a desert-like environment: ‘Stairway to Heaven’, ‘Spiral’ and ‘The City of Orion’.
The eventful history of Sijilmassa, the capital of Tafilalet founded around 750, is evident throughout the region around Rissani. Excavations, partially restored buildings, the sultans’ fortresses built in the wake of the conflicts, and an impressively reconstructed mausoleum make walks around Rissani a truly fascinating experience.
